19-year-old University of North Carolina student Faith Hedgepeth was brutally murdered on the morning of Sept. 7, 2012, in an off-campus apt. To this day, despite LOTS of evidence and suspicions, the case remains unsolved. It is my hope that a collaborative Web effort ("hivemind") may accomplish what law enforcement has been unable to do in two long years… solve this vicious, senseless crime. In recent years Web collaboration of 100s, has been the tool allowing many decades-old problems in science to be solved in a matter of months; it can work for solving crimes as well. On behalf of Faith, her friends, and loved ones... let's DO IT!

Here are links to several of the podcasts/sites that have covered the case in recent years (and of course you can google for many more news reports) -- I would caution though that virtually all podcasts and extended treatments of this case (including this blog!) have some facts wrong, and are highly speculative:

Bits & Pieces (& addendum)

Many may well already be aware of it, but I only recently discovered that Wikipedia has a page devoted to the Hedgepeth case here (good starting summary for anyone coming late to the case):

Also, a YouTuber has posted another video (21-min.) summary of the crime here:

Meanwhile I’ve learned that the “Trace Evidence” podcast is working on an episode devoted to the case.
==> ADDENDUM:  this podcast from Steven Pacheco is now available here (and it is very good! I don't quite agree with all his points, but very much worth listening to the whole thing):
And over at the WebSleuths’ thread for this case someone has brought up an oddity I’ve not seen discussed before. The below Red Robin (restaurant) receipt (from an ‘admirer’ just days before the murder) posted on Faith’s Instagram account is written partially in French — doesn’t necessarily mean anything, just seems a small peculiarity the very week of Faith’s assault. I presume law enforcement have looked into this to their satisfaction, but of course I don’t know for sure.

Finally, one last side-note: as most locals know there was another murder in Chapel Hill about a week ago, actually a double murder of an elderly mother and her 58-year-old live-in son, in a well-to-do neighborhood. Police have been completely tight-lipped about the case since, other than to say that they believe there is no danger to the public — precisely what they said following Faith’s brutal, unsolved murder.
The rumor I hear is that the son had mental health issues and it may be a case of a murder-suicide, which would make sense given the police-behavior. Still, I find it completely egregious that stigmas (unnecessarily) attached to mental health and suicide might prevent the public from information it ought have for it’s own well-being. It’s just hard to know when law enforcement is motivated to maintain a pristine image for a college town (which, like most major college towns, suffers a lot of crimes) and when they really have residents’ interest uppermost.
10/26: In an official update, police have confirmed that the son murdered his mother, but are awaiting autopsy reports before stating the cause of death of the son (though it seems clear/likely it was self-inflicted).

  1. Hi, Tom - watching you now on Dateline, which I have posted on my social media (in addition to subscribing to your blog here - keep up the good work!) ... I'm thinking the word "vente" on that R R ticket was a fashionable way of saying a size of a drink, something Starbucks introduced into the programme. When I clicked on the link, I couldn't believe her Instagram was still active! Thank you for looking into every idea no matter how tiny, and leaving no paper, in this case, unturned - bless!

    1. Hi Jeannee, I think you're trying to contact, or at least referencing Tom Gasparoli (not me), who runs another blog on this case:

  2. About the receipt that is partly in French... There isn't only the word "vente" that is French. There is also "pourboire". I think the customer whose Visa card was used to pay the bill has their credit account set to French because, lower in her Instagram pictures there is another picture of a receipt from the same restaurant and this one is all written in english. And, by the way... "vente" cannot be a fashionable way to say the size of a drink because it means "sale". And "pourboire" means "tip". Nothing too fancy about that.

  3. "vente" means "sale"
    "pourboire" means "tip"

The person whose credit card was used to pay the bill probably had their credit account set to French. If you look lower in her Instagram pictures, there is another receipt from the same restaurant and the words are all in English.

  4. In response to Unknown - I don't think it is the customer's credit card account, but probably somehow the language on the store's sales software was accidentally changed to French or purposefully done so (probably as a harmless prank). I also think it has absolutely zero to do with Faith's murder.
